Democratic Town Committee Supports Pakistani Couple Facing Deportation Order

Press Conference Is Monday, 3/19, at 11 a.m.

The New Britain Democratic Town Committee (DTC) unanimously endorsed a resolution at its March 8th organizational meeting in support of a married New Britain couple from Pakistan who face a March 19th deportation order.

Malik Naveed Bin Rehman and Zahida Altaf, owners of a Broad Street pizza shop, came to the U.S. in 2000 on visas.  In their efforts to extend visas and secure citizenship they fell victim to unscrupulous legal representation losing their pathway to citizenship, according to the DTC resolution.

The DTC resolution “supports the calls for stay of the Malik Naveed Bin Rehman and Zahida Altaf family because they are good-standing citizens of New Britain and help our city’s economy.”  The couple have a five-year-old daughter born in the U.S. and are the owners of Pizza Corner.

Last week the New Britain Common Council and Mayor unanimously supported a stay for the couple at its March 14th meeting.  Advocacy groups, including Students For A Dream, Action Together and other human rights organizations have joined in support of the Rehman-Altaf family.

A press conference will be held on Monday, March 19th at 11 a.m. at the Pizza Corner, 36 Broad Street, New Britain.  Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and other local and state officials are expected to lend their support for a stay for Malik Naveed Bin Rehman and Zahida Altaf and their daughter.
