Endorsements At City Hall July 18th
The Democratic Town Committee will meet on July 18th to endorse municipal candidates for the November 5th Election. The meeting will be held at New Britain City Hall starting at 7 p.m.
The 51-member committee elected from the city’s voting districts will endorse a slate to include Mayor, City and Town Clerk, Treasurer, Tax Collector, Common Council, Board of Education, Board of Assessment Appeal and Constable.
First-Term Mayor Tim O’Brien is seeking a second term emphasizing “bold investments” in education, neighborhood revitalization and pursuing economic development. In seeking re-endorsement O’Brien told the DTC: “I have turned around years of neglect for our schools into bold investments; made key investments and enforcement action to improve neighborhood quality of life.” Said O’Brien: “We are investing in parks and community gardens and building an optimistic future for our city. And all of this progress has come without increasing property taxes. New Britain can have a prosperous future with a good quality of life for everyone and New Britain’s people deserve that.”
The DTC’s nominating committee continues to meet with candidates and is preparing a report with information on all candidates for review by the entire committee.
Puerto Rican Society Celebrates Heritage, Honors Bobby Sanchez, July 5-6
New Britain’s Puerto Rican Society will hold its annual Festival on Friday July 5th and 6th at its High Street Hall. Festivities begin at noon on Friday in in front of N.ew Britain City Hall with a flag raising ceremony. State Rep. Bobby Sanchez (25), the Town Committee’s Vice Chair, will be the honoree at the Society’s Friday, July 5th dinner. Democrats will be on hand for the Saturday festival to register voters.
Party For Groom-To-Be Rick Lopes Saturday, July 6th
Wedding bells loom for 24th State Rep. Rick Lopes later this month and a stag party will be held in his honor at Whinstone Tavern on Saturday, July 6th. Political speeches will be kept to a minimum but have not been ruled out entirely…..
The stag party will be held Saturday, July 6th at Whinstone Tavern at Stanley Golf Course, 245 Hartford Road, New Britain from 7 to 11 pm. Lopes will wed Teresa Sapieha-Yanchak, the city’s Treasurer, on July 27th. New Britain Democrats extend congratulations to Rick and Teresa.
Good Luck CT Roughriders: Ward 3 Ald. Sanchez Coaches Team To AAU Nationals
The AAU Basketball Nationals will be held July 11th-16th at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Florida and Ward 3 Alderman Manny Sanchez will be leading a local team comprised of players from New Britain, West Hartford, Hartford and other area towns.
The trip to the Nationals will conclude a busy season for Coach Sanchez who’s been dividing time between work, school, city budget deliberations on the Common Council and the basketball court. More than 800 teams will be competing for a national championship. “All ten of these young men have gained interest from colleges and universities because of their individual and team performances at tournaments across the East Coast,” reports Sanchez, a member of the DTC.
