Loss for Labor and Democrats: The Passing of Denny O’Neil; Remembrance Today 10/14
Denny O’Neil, 65, the retired political director for New Britain-based AFSCME Council 4 and a labor Democrat active in campaigns from the 1970s through this year, died on October 12th after a long illness.
There was no stronger labor ally to New Britain Democrats than Denny O’Neil from his time with former Congressman Toby Moffett right up through this election year. Like many of us Denny hailed from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.
A Hartford native, Denny was a 1969 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. CT Mirror Political Writer Mark Pazniokas, in reporting on O’Neil’s death
, described him as “a passionate and profane booster of the political left, organized labor and the Boston Red Sox….O’Neil was a fixture in Connecticut politics for 40 years, working to elect Toby Moffet to Congress in the 1970s, working on the nuclear freeze movement in the 1980s and for the house of labor ever since.”
Denny’s friends and admirers are invited to a remembrance on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at The Crowne Plaza Hotel, 1284 Strongtown Road (exit 16 on Route 84), Southbury, CT at 6 p.m.
The wearing of Red Sox caps is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, Denny requested donations be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1933, Hartford, CT 06144.
New Britain Democrats extend condolences to Denny’s wife Sharon (Sam) McClure, the O’Neil family and his legion of friends and colleagues.

“The name of the game is to talk to people. If you don’t talk to people, you can’t get started…You knock on twenty doors or so, and twenty guys tell you to go to hell, or that they haven’t got time. But maybe at the fortieth or sixtieth house you find the one guy who is all you need. You’re not going to organize everything; you’re just going to get it started.”
