Only in New Britain and Newington: It’s Lopes for the 24th On Tuesday
Tuesday, January 10th voters will send a new state representative to Hartford from the 24th Assembly District. The district includes the following polling places: Vance Village School, 183 Vance Street, New Britain High School, 110 Mill Street (Voting will take place in gymnasium), Roosevelt Middle School, 40 Goodwin Street, Gaffney School, 322 Slater Road in New Britain and John Wallace Middle School, 77 Halleran Drive in Newington.
Rick Lopes, a former alderman and senate legislative aide to Don DeFronzo, faces two opponents in the district that was represented by Tim O’Brien for more than four terms. Lopes is seeking to continue a tradition of representation by progressive Democrats that has included Joseph H, Harper, Jr, Irene Favreau, David Pudlin and O’Brien.
“I believe I have the ability, the experience and the trust of the voters in the district to fill Tim O’Brien’s shoes and continue that good work that he has done for the past eight years,” Lopes has said. Key issues for Lopes include increased education and support of measures to reduce the use of the regressive property tax to pay for schools. He supports continued state funds for CONNPACE and the dial-a-ride program for older citizens. “I can hit the ground running at the capitol and make sure New Britain continues to have a strong voice for the city in state government,” stated Lopes, who holds a Master of Social Work degree and has owned a small business in the area since 1991.
There are three ways to help Rick Lopes on Tuesday: 1. Make calls to voters before Tuesday; 2. Give rides to the polls 3. Give any time you have on Election Day for poll standing and GOTV activities whether it’s for an hour or the day, snow or shine! Headquarters is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

End Quote: “Beloved Community”
I left India more convinced than ever before that nonviolent resistance was the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom. It was a marvelous thing to see the amazing results of a nonviolent campaign. India won her independence, but without violence on the part of Indians. The aftermath of hatred and bitterness that usually follows a violent campaign was found nowhere in India. The way of acquiescence leads to moral and spiritual suicide. The way of violence leads to bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. But the way of nonviolence leads to redemption and the creation of the beloved community. — Martin Luther King, Jr. Autobiography, Chapter 13 – re: March 1959
