Lopes For State Rep Campaign Kick Off At Whinstone on Monday, 12/12
A campaign kick off party for 24th House District Nominee Rick Lopes will be held Monday, December 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Whinstone Tavern (Stanley Golf Course), 245 Hartford Road in New Britain.
Lopes, nominated at a November 29th convention, is seeking to replace Tim O’Brien who resigned his House seat when he was elected Mayor in November. The special election will be held on Tuesday January 10th at Vance (1), New Britain High School (2), Roosevelt (3) and Gaffney (4)school polling places in New Britain. The 24th District includes the Wallace school (5) polling place in Newington.
Lopes , the former Ward One Alderman, is participating in the Citizens Election Fund and will qualify with sufficient donations from residents of New Britain and Newington. The minimum donation is $5 and the maximum is $100 to the campaign.
Mayor Uses On-Line Survey To Encourage Participation On Boards and Commission
Democrats, Republicans and Unaffiliated voters — are welcome to submit their names and qualifications to be considered for a nomination to one of the volunteer boards where citizen oversight and participation can make local government more accountable to residents. Over the last week Mayor Tim O’Brien completed his appointments to the city Police Commission. But 26 other bodies must be filled to have all hands on board for the new administration.

Commissions such as Fire, Parks and Recreation, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Board of Finance and Taxation, Civil Service/Personnel and Veterans are mandated by the City Charter. Special acts require the Board of Water Commissioners and the Fairview Cemetery Commission to be filled. Other commissions that have been established or re-established by ordinance after Charter change in 2003 include the Arts, Building, City Plan, Aging, Persons with Disabilities, Youth and Family Services, Ethics, Human Rights and Opportunities, Parking, Public Works, Health, Conservation, Ordinance Appeals Board and Housing Board of Appeals. Mayoral appointments will also be made for the Commission on Community & Neighborhood Development and the Municipal Economic Development Agency. Town Committee Meets At Roma Thursday, 12/22 For Meeting, Social
The Democratic Town Committee will hold a meeting and holiday social on Thursday, December 22nd, from 7 to 9 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Roma Sports Bar & Grill dining room, 382 Allen Street. Members and friends are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to local food bank

Town Committee Election. Immediately following the January 10th special election for the 24th House seat the 2012 political activities will begin starting with the petition period for Democratic Town Committee slates by district. The petition period is expected to begin January 18th in New Britain. Further details will be posted and will be available at the December 22nd Town Committee meeting.
