Emmanuel R. Sanchez, a member of the Democratic Town Committee from Voting District 7, has filled a vacancy on the City Common Council this week caused by the resignation of Alderwoman Silvia Cruz who stepped down for health reasons.
Sanchez’ appointment came at Wednesday’s regular Common Council meeting. The Ward 3 Democratic Town Committee unanimously endorsed Sanchez to fill the seat. Ward 3 is also represented on the Council by Alderwoman Shirley Black.
Sanchez, 22, is a graduate of the Watkinson School and attended Sacred University. He is continuing his undergraduate studies at Tunxis Community College. A Washington Street resident, Sanchez has been active in politics of New Britain since his senior year of high school. He is a volunteer and mentor to youth programs.
Democratic Town Chair John McNamara praised Sanchez’ active involvement in campaigns on behalf of Democrats and said he will be an effective and responsive representative on the Council representing Ward 3.
“We wish Alderman Cruz good health so she can get back to being involved in improving neighborhoods and public service soon.”
Sanchez will fill the Council through next November and the 2011 municipal election.
