With a first round of layoffs in the school system already underway, the Common Council will hold an 11th hour discussion (not a public hearing) on passing a city budget Tuesday, June 8th at City Hall at 7 p.m.
No details have yet emerged on what the Council will do in reconciling the differences between the Board of Finance proposal and Mayor Stewart’s budget, which cut more than $2 million out of the recommendation of his own finance board.
This year the Council faces difficult choices because of a difficult economy, the state budget crisis (the new state budget kept municipal aid at original amounts despite GOP efforts to slash it) and the reality that sales of property for development claimed by Stewart in prior years have not materialized.
The Council will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, June 9th and is scheduled to complete its budget deliberations by June 14th.
